The training camp’s structure is designed to fully immerse you in the local running culture.

Your Expert Guides and Pacemakers

Throughout the running camp, local Kenyan runners will join us as your pacers and guides to show you the very best trails and routes Iten has to offer.

Our guides will be with us every day for our main, scheduled run or workout. Any secondary runs will be independent sessions without a guide runner.

Most guests run once daily, with some adding in a second easy run to recover from the morning workouts.  Feel free to chat with one of our friendly coaches at camp if you are unsure what’s right for you.

Daily Schedule: Running with the Elites

To give you the best experience, our training sessions will mirror the local Kenyan schedule so you can share the roads with the elite athletes.

Local runners start their morning sessions at 6:15–6:30 AM and their afternoons around 4:00 PM.

We’ll aim to schedule our primary training sessions for these similar times.

Of course, if you prefer to run at another time, that’s absolutely fine! Just remember, our local guide runners will only be joining the primary scheduled session each day.

Your Stay at HATC

You’ll have a fantastic base at the High Altitude Training Centre (HATC), with full access to all the camp facilities, including the gym, sauna, and swimming pool.

Facility and Service Details

Internet: Free, shared WiFi is available in the lounge. Our top tip is to buy a local Safaricom SIM card (we can help on arrival!) and use your unlocked phone as a personal WiFi hotspot; it’s usually faster and more reliable!

Power: Please be aware that power can be unreliable in rural Kenya, and cuts are likely. HATC has a backup generator, but it won’t be instant. Please be patient, as the staff do everything they can to ensure your comfort!

Massage: A professional therapist is available on site. It costs 2000 Ksh per hour (cash payment to HATC).

Water: Please do not drink the tap water or use it to brush your teeth. Fresh drinking water is provided with all meals. Between meals, you can buy bottled water at local shops.

Photos and Community Respect

We definitely want you to capture every incredible moment, but we politely ask that you respect the athletes and local people in Iten when taking photographs.

Respect Privacy: Always ensure people are aware and happy to be photographed. If in doubt, please ask your guides!

Observing Elites: Watching the elites in action is always a camp highlight; however, we want to ensure we never disrupt their training. Please follow staff instructions when watching the elite runners. Remember, these athletes are at work and not a tourist attraction!

Our Camp Photographer

Our wonderful photographer, Toni, will be with the group, capturing fantastic shots of you training and enjoying camp life. You’ll receive all of Toni’s high-quality digital photos for free!
